​In Memphis, Tennessee, Dogs Rule Day Care and School has become much more than a place where dogs spend the day. Founded by Sallie Hughes, Dogs Rule was created with a simple but powerful idea in mind: to give dogs a safe, joyful, and enriching place where they could play, learn, socialize, and be cared for like family. From the beginning, Sallie’s love for animals shaped the spirit of Dogs Rule. She understood that dogs need more than supervision; they need connection, exercise, structure, patience, and fun. Her vision grew into a trusted gathering place for Memphis dogs and the people who love them.

 

In 2007, Katie Hughes joined Dogs Rule, bringing new energy and dedication to the business while helping carry forward the values Sallie had built. Katie’s addition marked an important chapter in the continued growth of Dogs Rule, strengthening its commitment to safety, community, and compassionate care.

Over the years, Dogs Rule has continued to grow and improve. In 2017, the playground received a state-of-the-art renovation, giving the dogs an even better space to run, explore, and play. Turf was added in 2018, creating a cleaner and more durable play environment. In 2022, permanent shading and awnings were installed, making the outdoor areas more comfortable and protected for dogs throughout the year.

 

Today, Dogs Rule employs a dedicated team of full-time and part-time “wranglers” who spend their days playing with the dogs and assuring their safety. These wranglers are at the heart of the Dogs Rule experience. They supervise playgroups, encourage positive interactions, keep the dogs engaged, and make sure every dog has the opportunity to enjoy the day in a safe and healthy way.

 

On any given day, anywhere from 70 to 150 dogs attend Dogs Rule. Some come bursting through the door eager to play, while others may need a little reassurance, patience, or gentle encouragement. No matter their personality, each dog is welcomed into an environment where the rules are simple and beloved: play hard, play safe, and have fun!

 

Dogs Rule is also deeply connected to the Memphis animal community. The day care supports efforts to help foster dogs find permanent homes by giving them opportunities for socialization, structure, and positive experiences with people and other dogs. For many foster dogs, time spent in a safe, active, and supportive environment can help build confidence and make the transition into a forever home easier.

 

In addition, Dogs Rule is a supporter of animal rescues throughout Memphis. By standing alongside local rescue groups, Dogs Rule helps strengthen the network of people and organizations working to improve the lives of animals in the community. Its commitment reaches beyond day care and school services; it reflects a broader belief that every dog deserves care, companionship, and a chance to thrive.

 

In 2021, Dogs Rule lost its founder, Sallie Hughes. Her passing marked a deeply meaningful moment in the history of the business, but her legacy continues every day in the care, joy, and community she helped create. The playgrounds, the wranglers, the rescue support, and every happy dog who walks through the door are part of the lasting impact of Sallie’s vision.
